Organizations lobby for freedom of expression in Africa

Accra, Ghana (PANA) 28/06/07 - Media and civil society organizations have asked the African Union during its summit in Ghana 1-3 July, to include an additional protocol in its African Human Rights Charter on the freedom of expression.

The petition is contained in a resolution made at the end of a conference on strengthening the freedom of expression in Africa held 25-26 June in Accra. Noting that the freedom of expression was on the decline on the continent due to "increased impunity" by violators, participants at the conference denounced "the limited interpretation" by states of article 9 of the African human rights and people's Charter.
