A recent article (November 12th)in the Financial Times by Mure Dickie points out that hopes that the internet would inevitably help to bring about greater freedom of expression have been seriously undermined by the recent experience of China. China has successfully learned how to control direct dissent and even turn internet technology to its advantage. See
