"Tjibaou, the Reconciliation" wins AIBD World TV Award 2007

The winner of the Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development (AIBD)World TV Award 2007 for the Best television documentary contributing to Conflict Resolution is titled Tjibaou, The Reconciliation, produced by Executive Producers Walles Kotra & Gilles Dagneau of RFO(France).

The award was announced at the Asian Media Summit held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from the 29-31 May. The award, a trophy and USD $7000, will be presented at the next General Conference.

Tjibaou, The Reconciliation is a 52-minute documentary that describes how, it took 15 years for the Wea family in New Caledonia to forgive the killers of Jean Marie Tjibaou whose murder threatened the fragile and new found peace in the islands of Melanesia. It also created a wall of hatred and denial between the two families. Through meditation, discussions and dialogues this reconciliation brought peace not only to the two families but also to the overall political scenario of these islands. Travelling over days via sea, land and then on foot the Wea family and clan members approached the Tjibaou family for forgiveness. And it is the wives of these men who decide to put the past behind then for the sake of their future generations.

The winner will receive the Award – a trophy and USD 7,000 for the producer and the broadcasting organisation – during the next AIBD General Conference to be held in Maldives in July 2007.

The runner-up is Children - Victims of War, a documentary directed by Suzana Hetrich, produced by Hrvoje Habekovic and broadcast on HRT 1 (Croatian TV).
