Culture of Peace continues to advance

A summary report by civil society on the culture of peace has been formally submitted to the United Nations Secretary-General by the Bangladesh Ambassador to the United Nations. In his accompanying letter, the Ambassador requests the Secretary-General to submit the summary report to the 60th Session of the UN General Assembly for its consideration in the plenary meeting planned to be devoted to the International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-violence for the Children of the World, 2001-2010.

The summary report* is now available on http://decade-culture-of-peace.org . According to David Adams of the Fundacion Cultura de Paz, the report “indicates that the culture of peace is advancing, according to most of the almost 700 organizations from around the world, despite neglect by the mass media and, to a great extent, by the United Nations.

Given the problem of media coverage, it has been suggested that it is up to all of us in the coming months and years to turn this around so that actions for a culture of peace are treated as more newsworthy than the news of violence. To begin this process, please share the summary report with your organizations and networks, and with the mass media in the regions where you are located. Also, once they are published, please send all news reports to us at news@decade-culture-of-peace.org.”
